Baytown Historical Museum By: Stephanie Salgado

Located at: 220 west. Defee street.
It was built in 1936, former post office and federal building today is now known as the Baytown Historical Museum.  In 1938-1985 the building was known as Baytown Post Office known as the best little local museum Theme of the museum is cultural. The Baytown historical museum exists to further Historical literacy pursuits to the discovery. The origin of the museum dates back to May 1970, when the city of Baytown formed a historical committee to look into establishing a historical museum in Baytown. It is considered the best Little Local Museum in Texas.
I feel that this museum is a significant symbol of Baytown because it holds history of their town and how throughout the years it has changed and developed. The Baytown Historical Museum is operated in conjunction with the Area Heritage Society of Baytown, so it holds a lot of values and vintage properties that belonged to this city. The Museum holds collections and historical data relating to Baytown, Texas and the surrounding area. It’s probably the only place to besides the other Baytown Preservation Association is a historical museum that is involved with the Baytown historical Museum.

Whenever I passed by it didn’t seem like a museum to me, it looked like any other, lonely, building like most of the buildings in Baytown. They should rebuild it or make it more interesting to catch people’s attention and make them want to know more about what they have to show. I know they let schools have inside tours when they go on fieldtrips, because I remember when I was in elementary School we went there. To be honest I wasn’t really paying attention I just noticed all the old, odd, antiques people used to have back then. Regardless of how little the building is for a Museum, it has a lot of valuable and important things that people don’t know about yet. A very close friend of mine who had went to the fieldtrip with me when we were in elementary she said "it was the first museum she ever went" but she pictured the museum would have been a lot bigger. Knowing it may be the smallest museum in Baytown but other people may find it a perfect size museum for a small city like Baytown.
They’re willing to show their exhibits to anyone who is interested and looking for volunteers. I suppose that they want other to be involved to acknowledge them about what The Historical Museum is about. They want to make people in Baytown think that having a small museum in their town isn’t a problem. So people can enjoy and learn about their hometown or how Baytown started to change from the past decades till now. From my point of view not many people go because they think it’s the old Federal Post Office that it once was. That’s why the owners had set up a website for the Historical Museum in Baytown to catch their attention and have more people to visit or just if their interested.
